Zulu Masks - decorative wall ceramics

The Zulu belief was in ancestral spirits (amaThongo or amaDlozi), who had the power to intervene in people's lives, for better or worse. Traditionally, the Zulus recognize several elements present in a human being: the physical body (inyama yomzimba or umzimba); the breath or vital force (umoya womphefumulo or umoia); and the "shadow," prestige or personality (isithunzi). Once the umoya leaves the body, the isithunzi can live as an ancestral spirit (idlozi) only if certain conditions are met in life. Demonstrating respect and generosity towards others increases the moral standing or prestige of the community, the isithunzi. In contrast, acting negatively towards others can reduce the isithunzi, and it is possible for the isithunzi to disappear completely.
